Federal Express Corporation announced Tuesday it has become the first charter corporate sponsor and the official delivery service of the new All American Football League.

The announcement was made by Rudi Schiffer, executive vice president of marketing and logistics for the Memphis Mad Dogs, and John Ralston, president of the All American Football League.

Ralston said he hopes to foster a close marketing partnership and joint promotional effort between the league and its corporate partners.

Federal Express, which is owned by Memphis Mad Dogs owner Fred Smith, becomes the first major corporate sponsor of the new league.

'96 Chronology-Opportunity Knocks

Event Description: New League Eyes Talent

Spence Fischer, a three-year starter at Duke, was the first  quarterback selected Monday in the All American Football League collegiate draft.

He was chosen by the Birmingham Barracudas on the first day of the AAFL's college player draft. Fischer threw for 2,668 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior year at Duke.

This league has opened up some new opportunities for many players,” Fischer said. “It's very exciting for me, as it is for all these players. It also gives me another option along with the NFL if that opportunity arises.”

Other notable quarterbacks who were drafted included Jeff Lewis (Northern Arizona) by Las Vegas, Jon Stark (FSU) by Miami, and Mike Cawley (James Madison) by Memphis.

'96 Chronology-Roll of the Dice

Event Description: Marinovich Joins Posse

The Las Vegas Posse of the All American Football League have signed former L.A. Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich.

Marinovich was drafted in the first round of the 1991 NFL Draft by the Raiders with the 24th overall pick. He signed a three-year, $2.25 million dollar contract with the team. He played sparingly during the 1991 season and was relegated to a backup role.

Marinovich shared the Raiders' starting job with Jay Schroeder during the 1992 season. He completed 81 of 165 passes (49 percent) for 1,102 yards and five touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Marinovich was suspended for the 1993 season due to drug violations and was subsequently released. An attempted comeback in 1994 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers failed after an injury during training camp.

Marinovich joins veteran Timm Rosenbach and third-year man Len Williams on the Posse roster.

'96 Chronology-Odessa Files

Event Description: Pirates Sign Handful

Odessa Turner, a wide receiver for seven seasons with the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League, says he has signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Pirates of the All American Football League.

Turner, who played with the Ottawa Rough Riders last season, said the contract signed Friday included a signing bonus and other guarantees. Turner said the Pirates' contract also includes an option for an additional season.

In his third year with Giants, Turner had his best pro season hauling in 38 receptions, gaining 467 yards and scoring four touchdowns. He has 167 career receptions for 2,533 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Along with Turner, the Pirates also agreed to terms with former WLAF pivot Mike Johnson as well as running back Junior Smith and wideouts Terry Smith and Fred Montgomery.
